You know what I love in fandom? When it’s purposely vague.

That’s the best part about fandoms like EarthBound/Mother or Mario (my two faaaavorites). They don’t explain things.

Why is that awesome? Because it lets the fans take the story and expand it far beyond what it originally was. It allows us to think about characters that maybe didn’t get a lot of development but had just enough to pique our curiosity. It allows us to try and fill in the gaps in the story ourselves (hence why Cognitive Dissonance is such an awesome fangame).

A fandom for a show/game/movie/comic/etc. that actually gives you the whole picture is nice, but one that leaves a lot up to interpretation lets us both to exercise our creativity AND show our love for whatever fandom we’re in. It’s good practice and even better inspiration.

Peace out and God bless!

It's sword of a double edge sword, though. One thing I've noticed about vagueness in fiction is that a lot of times, people tend to twist it into something that it was never meant to become. I mean, this goes beyond bad fanfics or slash shipping. I remember reading a short story called "The use of Force" where a doctor is trying to examine a reluctant girl to diagnose an illness, and some people interpreted the story as a rape incident, and I was all like "Whaaaaaaat?". I mean, I have to agree with you that there is a charm to be had when you can finish off the rest of the story in your own head, but that doesn't come without it's drawbacks.
