About 18 years have passed and thus the greatest cat who ever walked this earth's time has passed.
Nin.
He's been with me and my family since I was about 2 (pretty much as far back as I can remember) and he's always been there. Always lazing about the living room, begging for food like the pig of a cat he was. He was the king of this here household, always had this regal look to him as he sat on the back of the couch and stared out the window as though he were surveying his kingdom. Everyone had their favorite cat in my feline infested home (and some had their least favorites), but Nin was everyone's. He was universally loved. Everyone who ever lived here or visited knew Nin was the greatest. Even the dysfunctional mess of cats who lived here all had a strange mutual respect for him. Even Amber, who holds this intense hatred of any other living creature that isn't human or herself.
He always had the bizarre habit of begging for food when he already had some. He'd either want you to put new food on his old food or he'd want you to just watch him eat for some reason. And no matter how old he got, catnip always turned him right back into a kitten again.
But the greatest thing about Nin was his affectionate nature. Food or not, he always loved everyone, especially my mom. Every night for years he would wake her up in the middle of the night, scratching at the back of her head so he could lie under the covers next to her like a stuffed animal.
He was more than just a cat. He was a part of the family and I don't think I've ever been so attached to any pet before (with the exception of Amber, thankfully she has many more years ahead of her).
And now it's been 18 years. We've already had many a close call but finally, his age had caught up to him. It was too much and we had to put him down.
Goodbye Nin. You best be up there putting on your cutest begging face for God when you need a lap to lie on. Long live the greatest cat in the world.
